Land Use resources

April 13, 2012

Kurt Schindler, an MSU Extension educator, maintains a Land Use webpage that provides resources for planning and zoning in Michigan. Materials include a listing of MSU Extension education programs available in your community; flyers and other materials on a wide range of planning and zoning topics including statutes, court cases, planning and zoning procedure checklists, frequently asked questions and answers; sample documents (such as planning commission or zoning board of appeals by-laws, planning commission ordinance, and some example zoning text); Michigan Planning Enabling Act; Michigan Zoning Enabling Act; Municipal Joint Planning Act; coordinated planning; and an archive of older materials such as statutes and checklists.  Also found are results of research on topics such as planning and zoning, global or new economy, placemaking, ground and surface water protection, right to farm act, wind energy and other alternative energy, subdivisions, infrastructure reviews, capital improvement plans, GIS, wild fire prevention and more. The site also includes a wide variety of links to other land use, planning, and zoning resources on the Internet. There are also materials for residents that wish to participate at public hearings to influence local planning and zoning decisions. The webpage is exclusively for use in Michigan, and does not include materials which are germane for use in other states.
