Equine welfare science is an emerging discipline. This guide will help youth learn equine welfare principles as well as how to better care for their own horses. It is designed to assist horse leaders in providing an interesting, fun, and valuable experience for youth. It also provides a way to teach and improve important skills for life such as clear oral communication, information gathering, analytical thinking, and observation. It contains seven lessons that include a leader guide, resource information, activity sheets, and discussion questions. Each lesson is aligned to the National Research Council Science and Engineering Practices. Lessons cover an introduction to animal welfare, behavioral and physiological indicators, production and immunological measures, human and animal interaction, animal ethics and welfare evaluation. A helpful glossary is included.

Also reference the guide's supplement, 4-H Equine Welfare Assessment Sample Scenarios, to test your knowledge about equine welfare.
