Zoning and Siting

Zoning considerations are very important in developing Michigan’s wind resource.  As wind energy expands in Michigan, local township and zoning officials are working hard to create zoning ordinances that can accommodate wind development while keeping considering existing land uses.

Michigan State University Extension Bulletin bulletin explains some of the most common land use issues related to wind energy system installation. It provides references to the most recent science behind the issues. A growing number of Michigan jurisdictions have laws specific to wind turbine developments.

Small wind systems can generally be sited more easily, and permitting is usually a relatively simple process.  However, some local jurisdictions are also including small wind systems in their siting guidelines.  The American Wind Energy Association has created a Small Turbine Permitting Guidebook to help local officials with this process.
