What is prediabetes?
Prediabetes means your blood glucose (sugar) level is higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed with diabetes. Prediabetes raises your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
Even though prediabetes puts a person at an increased risk, there are ways to lower the risk of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition that can lead to health issues such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and loss of toes, feet, or legs.
Risk factors for prediabetes
People are more likely to have prediabetes and type 2 diabetes if they:
- Are 45 years of age or older
- Are overweight
- Have a family history of type 2 diabetes
- Are physically active fewer than three times per week
- Have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes during pregnancy or gave birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds.
