Workforce preparation skills for youth

Application resources to help youth be successful when applying for awards, scholarships, college, jobs and more.

To be competitive in today’s job market, it is important for young people to know how to complete applications, write resumes and develop successful interview skills. Through Michigan 4-H Youth Development, 4-H’ers have many opportunities to complete award, scholarship, school and employment applications. 4-H staff and volunteers can help bring knowledge to life by utilizing many of the 4-H on-line career preparation tools.

In addition, Michigan State University Extension is offering a two-session series for youth in ninth grade and up. “Successful You!” will be held in Southwest Michigan on Mon., April 22 and 29, 2013, from 5-7 p.m., at the Van Buren Technology Center in Lawrence, Mich. This workshop series is free to participants. “Successful You!” participants will learn:

  • How to correctly fill out an application
  • How to complete a resume
  • Successful interview preparation and skills
  • Interview follow-up

Workshop participants will leave the series with enhanced workforce preparation skills that can be used for a lifetime, along with completion certificates. Although our primary audience is high-school aged youth, 4-H and community volunteers working with young people are also welcome to join us.

Registration is required through the Berrien County MSU Extension office by April 15. To register for “Successful You!” contact Deb Barrett by phone at 269-944-4126 or e-mail .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). Space is limited and we must have a minimum of 10 participants to hold the series.
