Update on aster leafhopper infectivity in Michigan for June 13-19, 2012

Aster yellows infectivity of aster leafhoppers continues to increase.

Editor’s note: The map and threshold section of this article were updated on June 27, 2012.

According to six aster leafhopper sweep-net samples taken between June 13-22, aster yellows infectivity ranged from 5.2 to 12.9 percent on carrot, celery and lettuce crops.

Thresholds per 100 sweeps:

12-13 percent infectivity: celery - 2, carrot - 4
9 percent infectivity: celery - 3, carrot - 5
5 percent infectivity: celery - 8, carrot - 10

The threshold for lettuce is slightly lower than for celery.
