Two apple thinning meetings in southeast Michigan
Apple growers are encouraged to attend one of two meetings on Thursday, May 23, to discuss specific apple thinning strategies for this unique season.
I am planning two, quick thinning meetings for apple growers this coming Thursday, May 23. We will be talking about the need to start thinning much earlier than growers are accustomed; products to use; rates to use; timing windows of thinners; how to determine crop load; thinning in freeze-damaged blocks; types of equipment to use; and combining thinners with other pesticides. Michigan State University Extension educator Phil Schwallier will be our featured speaker; he is very knowledgeable in this area.
The first meeting will be held at Applewood Orchards, 2988 Rodesiler Hwy., Deerfield, MI 49238 (view map and directions) starting at 11 a.m. The second meeting will be held at Spicer Orchards, 10411 Clyde Rd., Fenton, MI 48430 (view map and directions), starting at 1:30 p.m.
Each of these meeting will last about an hour or so. We will meet at the shop at both farms to get started; look for my dark red GMC pickup.
