There is still time to enjoy Michigan early fall seasonal fruits. Michigan State University Extension recommends that you consume fruit as a part of your daily meals and snacks. Farmer’s markets still have Michigan fresh fruit available such as:
Apples - like the Fuji, gala, honey crisp and Jonathan gold varieties. If you need to increase your dietary fiber intake then apples are a great source of fiber. They contain antioxidants and flavonoids. Apples can be used in a variety of dishes such as salads, entrees, pies, baked into apple chips or applesauce.
Cranberries - a good source of fiber, vitamins C and disease-fighting antioxidants. Possible health benefits from eating cranberries are:
- Improved immune function
- Lower risk of urinary tract infections
- Decreased blood pressure
- Prevention of certain types of cancer
Grapes – contain fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants. According to food science researchers, resveratrol is a natural compound that can be found in fruit such as grapes. Resveratrol has a protective effect on immune health.
Pears – an excellent source of fiber, flavonoid antioxidants as well as vitamins and minerals. Consuming pears may help with weight loss and reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease, if eaten as part of an overall healthy diet.
Blackberries and Raspberries – rich in vitamin C, fiber and phytochemicals. Michelle Miller, of Michigan Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, says that berries help boost the immune system while protecting the body against inflammation, heart disease and cancer because of their high levels of phytonutrient. “Berries are also a low-calorie food packed with fiber, vitamin C, potassium and folate acid.”

Pear Party Salsa
Makes 4 Servings
- 1 pear, cored and finely chopped
- 1 apple, cored and finely chopped
- 2 kiwifruit, cored and finely chopped
- 1 orange, peeled and finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- cinnamon graham crackers (optional)
In a medium-sized bowl, combine pear, apple, kiwi and orange. Pour honey and lemon juice over fruit, and gently toss. Scoop up bites of fruit salsa using cinnamon graham crackers (optional).
