The 2017 National Ag Day essay and video contest deadline is right around the corner

The official theme for the 2017 National Ag Day is “Agriculture: Food for Life”. Michigan students are encouraged to enter the National Ag Day essay and video contest and have until January 31st to submit entries.

National Ag Day is sponsored by the Agriculture Council of America, and its objective is to celebrate agriculture and help consumers understand how farmers produce healthy, nutritious and safe food. The essay and video conference is open to students in grades 9 through 12 in the 2016-2017 school year. Contestants can submit one written essay and one video essay entry. The rules, qualifications and scoring for both contests are available on the Ag Day website. The national video essay winner will receive a $1,000 award and the winner of the written essay will receive a $1,000 award and a trip to Washington, D.C. to be recognized at the National Press Club breakfast on National Ag Day, March 21, 2017.

Students are encouraged to show support for Michigan agriculture and the 52,194 farms in the mitten state. Producing more than 300 agricultural commodities, Michigan is the second most agriculturally diverse state in the nation so there is plenty to show and say about agriculture in our state. In addition to encouraging participation in National Ag Day activities, Michigan State University Extension supports agriculture literacy through its Breakfast on the Farm (BOTF) program www.breakfastonthefarm  and other activities in local communities.
