Spring fruit update grower meetings in southwest Michigan

Evening meetings in Berrien and Van Buren counties to help fruit growers prepare for the upcoming 2012 growing season.

Apricot tree in bloomThe southwest Michigan spring fruit updates are scheduled for Thursday nights during the last two weeks of March. The Berrien County meeting will be on March 22 at the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center near Benton Harbor, Mich., and the Van Buren County meeting will be on March 29 at the Lawrence Conference Center. Both meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and run until 8:30 p.m. and there is a $5 charge for the meetings.

These meetings will be a review of new information on insect and disease control in commercial tree fruit, including new pesticide chemistries being introduced to control insects and diseases. Pesticide resistance management as well as the models for insects and disease pest management that are available on the MSU Enviro-weather website will also be discussed. The meeting will cover several issues of pesticide use including spray timing, mode of action, effectiveness and longevity.

The Monday Fruit Spray Updates are scheduled to begin on Monday, April 9. The meetings will again be at Annette and Randy Bjorge’s Fruit Acres Farm at the corner of Friday and Carmody Roads, south of the Coloma Exit on I-94. There will be no charge for the weekly Monday meetings.
