Soil test kits for sale at Detroit Eastern Market

Smart gardeners test their soil to maximize green space beauty.

Smart gardeners concerned with the health of their plants test their soil to know what nutrients are needed to create a beautiful surrounding. Michigan State University Extension in Wayne County will kick off the 2013 growing season by selling soil test kits at their outreach information booth/Kiosk in Shed 3 at Detroit Eastern Market on Saturday, May 18 and Saturday, May 25, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The soil test kits are self-mailers and cost $25 payable by cash or check only. Postage to send the sample to the MSU Soil Testing Lab is included in the fee.

MSU soil tests analyze the nutrient content of phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, organic matter content and pH of the soil. Your soil test results will include a fertilizer recommendation based on the type of crop being grown. Lead analysis is available for an additional $20 charge.

Information is power for successful gardneners and the MSU soil test provides a bounty of useful knowledge to help you evaluate the best way to accurately manage your lawns and gardens.

Information on which crops are in currently in season and the best ways to store and prepare them for tasty meals is also available at the Kiosk. Visitors can also learn about and register for upcoming local MSU Extension programming with the help of MSU Extension staff and volunteers manning the Kiosk.

We are ramping up for a great season filled with cooking and gardening demonstrations at the Kiosk, so stay tuned to find out about the great happenings at the Kiosk at Detroit Eastern Market this summer.
