Partnering in on-farm wheat trials

To attain top wheat yields, growers are encouraged to learn from each other by participating in a new on-farm research project.

Each season, farmers make many field observations on which to base future production decisions. This season, MSU Extension encourages wheat growers to partner with other growers across the state to conduct on-farm wheat trials.

This first season, the hope is that several growers would be willing to establish trials to measure the effect of a fungicide application or increased fertilizer nitrogen rates, or both. The process does require replicated treatments, but can be made relatively easy by minimizing the number of treatments and by scaling the strips to suit the farm’s equipment. In addition, agribusinesses are very adept at these field scale trials and may be happy to cooperate.
