EAST LANSING, Mich.—Golf enthusiasts can participate in an online auction for rounds of golf on some of the top courses in the country and improve the science underlying golf courses at the same time by helping raise funds for turfgrass research.

The online auction, dubbed Tee Times 4 Turf, will raise funds for the Michigan State University (MSU) turfgrass science program and the Michigan Turfgrass Foundation. The Michigan Turfgrass Foundation is sponsoring the event.

“It’s really a win-win for golfers,” said Trey Rogers, professor in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at MSU. “Golfers get a great opportunity to bid and play on some of the best courses in Michigan and around the country, and at the same time they raise dollars for turfgrass research from which they ultimately benefit.”

“Tee Times 4 Turf has become one of the key fund-raising events for the MSU turfgrass program every year with support from the entire golf industry, and the golfer benefits by having the opportunity to play great golf courses with great turf,” said Kevin Frank, MSU associate professor in the Department  of Crop and Soil Sciences.

In 2010, the auction raised more than $30,000 for turfgrass research, and the auction continues to grow.  This year, 204 courses donated rounds for the auction.

This year’s auction began April 29 and runs through May 13.
