MSU Extension’s spotted wing drosophila workshops

These workshops are designed to help fruit growers prepare for this new invasive pest.

MSU is presenting three hands-on training workshops on spotted wing drosophila this spring. Designed for scouts, consultants and growers, each identical class will provide an opportunity for attendees to gain in-depth training to prepare them for monitoring for this new pest in 2011. The workshop will include training on identification, trap construction, fly identification, and fruit sampling, with a focus on blueberry. However, the information will be relevant for other susceptible fruit crops.

Two workshops will be in English (April 11 morning session and June 1 morning session) and one will be in Spanish (April 11 afternoon session). On the afternoon of June 1, there will be a field training component to demonstrate how to deploy and maintain monitoring traps and to provide record keeping guides. All classes will be at MSU’s Trevor Nichols Research Complex in Fennville, and advance registration ($25 per person) is required for attendance at the workshops. Payment for one of the three classroom workshops includes registration at the June 1 field training.

See the spotted wing drosophila workshop form for details and to register.
