MSU Extension launches new training program for school food service staff

MSU Extension and Cornell University have joined forces to offer a new training program in response to new USDA Professional Standards for school food service programs.

In September 2015, the USDA released new professional standards and learning objectives for school food service personnel. Current regulations require schools to implement complicated meal patterns and complete a nutrient analysis of foods served. With the addition of the new USDA Professional Standards, school food service directors will now need to plan and implement a comprehensive educational program for their staff that is cost effective, relevant, and high quality. 

In partnership with Cornell University, Michigan State University Extension has developed a training program that will assist school foodservice professionals meet their new annual training requirements. As part of the Smarter Lunchroom Movement, over 60 MSU Extension Health and Nutrition staff became certified Technical Assistance Providers (TAPs) of the Smarter Lunchroom Movement this fall. As part of this certification, MSU Extension staff are able to provide food service staff training hours that satisfy many of the USDA learning objectives and can be customized to suit the school food service teams’ backgrounds, goals and logistical constraints. The lessons can be offered as quick ten minute lessons or packaged into one to two hour blocks of time.
