Providing opportunities for youth to share their voice through youth-adult partnerships is a key focus of Michigan 4-H Youth Development. Staff believe 4-H clubs are the best when youth are running meetings and further believe the program as a whole is richer when youth can influence decisions in programming efforts. In 2015, the Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council was created to do just that.

State Youth Leadership Council brings teen leaders from across Michigan together to provide authentic youth voice in Michigan 4-H youth programs and to assist with promoting 4-H programs on a statewide level. The Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council provides a high-level leadership opportunity for older youth to learn about 4-H beyond their own experiences by talking with and learning from 4-H members across the state.

“State Youth Leadership Council creates the opportunity for teens to share with prospective clientele and stakeholders the impact 4-H has on its participants,” said Erin Kramer, State Youth Leadership Council youth advisor.

State Youth Leadership Council members meet twice in person throughout the year at statewide 4-H events, including the Teen Leadership and Global Citizenship Spectacular and 4-H Exploration Days. Additionally, State Youth Leadership Council members meet once per month by calling in or logging into an online telecommunication platform. During these meetings, youth learn from each other about the wide variety of 4-H experiences offered around the state while working to build their leadership and communication skills.

In 2017, the 25-member Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council organized service projects in their communities, participated in local and statewide 4-H events to serve as speakers, volunteers and facilitators, and served as representatives of 4-H as the featured program at the Cowles’ House Pre-game Celebration.

Applications are now available for the 2018 Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council. 4-H members aged 15-19 are encouraged to apply for a two-year seat on the council by applying online at 2018 State Youth Leadership Council Application. The deadline to apply is Oct. 27, 2017.
