Michigan 4-H’s premier leadership council seeking applicants
Apply now to join the 2017 Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council. Deadline to apply is Nov. 1, 2016.
It’s no secret the best promoters of programs are the participants themselves. Far more impactful than paid staff members, 4-H youth members are able to tell their story and share the impact of programs with perspective clientele and stakeholders. Since 2015, Michigan 4-H has provided an opportunity for youth to share their 4-H stories with fellow youth leaders from across Michigan and the general public as they promote Michigan State University Extension 4-H Youth Development programs.
The Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council is intended to bring teen leaders from across Michigan together to serve as a statewide 4-H advisory group, assist with promotion of 4-H programs and provide authentic youth voice in the Michigan 4-H program. The Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council provides a high-level leadership opportunity for older youth to strive and a venue for 4-H professionals to obtain feedback on new programs, promotional efforts, etc. Further, by participating in the council, youth have an opportunity to represent Michigan at the National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C., where they bring youth voice to important federal government units and decisions while working with 4-H’ers from across the United States and learning to appreciate a broad diversity of opinions and ideas.
In 2016, the 25-member Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council organized six service projects in their communities, participated in high-stake donor events representing Michigan 4-H, traveled to the Fifth-Third Bank Michigan State Fair, and helped facilitate sessions at the 4-H Youth Leadership and Global Citizenship Spectacular. The members meet monthly using online technology and at least twice annually during existing 4-H events in order to build their sense of team and increase their individual and collective leadership and promotional skills.
