Making it work: Combing breastfeeding and working - Part 2
Making your plans for breastfeeding when you go back to work.
Breastfeeding is recommended for you baby’s first year. The longer babies are breastfed, the greater the benefits for mom, baby and society. Planning and preparing to return to work or school will help make this transition go smoothly. Please review part one of this series for making your plan for breastfeeding and returning to work. This article will take through the two weeks prior to the big day.
At least two weeks before returning to work or school make one or more trial runs. Have your baby stay with the childcare provider you have selected during typical feeding time. Practice expressing milk at work or home while your baby is at childcare.
The day or night before, pack your baby’s diaper bag. Pack your breast pump and collection bottles or bags. Freeze reusable ice packs. Gather containers of breast milk for the child care provider to use for the next day. Place the containers of frozen breast milk in the refrigerator to thaw. Lay out you and your baby’s clothes. Try to go to bed early.
On the big day, set your alarm at least 30 minutes earlier than usual. Breastfeed your baby as soon as you wake up so they will be content while you get ready for work. Get dressed and eat breakfast. Pack your baby’s milk in an insulated container. Place the diaper bag, milk and breast pump by the door or in the car. Breastfeed again so your baby will be content during the ride to childcare.
