Learn how to scout for onion thrips in onions
This new video made by MSU Extension educators explains how to scout for onion thrips and use treatment thresholds.
Onion thrips are one of the most damaging insect pests of onions in the Great Lakes region. This video—produced by Michigan State University Extension—aims to help onion growers and crop consultants scout onion fields to obtain the information they need to make timely decisions about onion thrips control. It demonstrates how to count thrips in the field, record field data, and do calculations to determine if thrips numbers are over threshold. The combined use of accurate thrips counts and research-based thresholds can help growers save money by reducing sprays while helping ensure that sprays are timely and maintain thrips populations at economically acceptable levels.
