Martin Luther King Jr Day: a day to serve

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a great way to start your year off!

Did you resolve to be more involved in your community this year, to make a difference in the world around you? If so, Michigan State University Extension encourages you to plan now to be part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service this year.

This day of service is recognized across the country by groups of all ages, races and religions and offers you the opportunity to plan an event, big or small in your community. Observed the third Monday of January, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day should really be your day on instead of a day off; a day for all of us to answer the call to serve. This is a day to serve others and look beyond our own needs to the needs of those around us – in our communities and beyond. A day to help one another and bridge the gaps that exist.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a fabulous way to introduce people young and old to the concept of service and to have an open dialogue of community issues and needs. Consider this your call to action, take your pledge to serve and start the year helping others!

You can help young people learn about the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with free lesson plans and resources from the Corporation for National and Community Service and Scholastic. This website also offers you the opportunity to register your event, report on your event and learn more about special initiatives.
