How do I find information on careers and workforce preparation?

Michigan State University Extension provides research and education in the areas of careers, workforce preparation and entrepreneurship offering workshops, trainings and sharing of information. What types of information are on the website and how do I find out where it is at? Just visit the MSU Extension website, click on 4-H in the navigation and scroll down to Careers and Entrepreneurship section. If by chance you are unable to find this website, check with your local MSU Extension staff. They will share with you how to find the information and show what is listed. Workshops, trainings and resource people can also be shared to give volunteers and teen leaders more information on specific topics.

In this article, I will share some topics that are listed to give you an idea of what is on the website.

Starting with Career Exploration, youth can try using hands-on experiences to see if a career fits them. Build Your Future, which was designed by a team of MSU Extension educators, can help youth find out what type of educational path or training or job fits their interests, skills and abilities. Listed under careers and entrepreneurship, there are resources on identifying skill sets, networking and job search, resumes and portfolios and interviewing skills.

Another content area for Michigan 4-H Youth Development is workforce preparation. Youth are able to prepare in finding a job and keeping a job. Learn the professional handshake, how to dress for success and other tips on preparing yourself for the workforce.

Under Youth Entrepreneurship, young people have the opportunity to use curriculum and attend trainings to create and chart their own destinies. From market livestock, crafts, foods to worm farming and bio-fuel production, 4-H has taken the lead to combine business concepts and creativity. Youth can learn that entrepreneurship comes in many forms such as making improvements, packaging, pricing, identifying, innovation and risk-taking. Also, in this section, youth money management is another whole area of information that can be shared.
