Healthy holiday meal makeovers are now easier than ever

A new blog and resource from USDA MyPlate offers healthy spins on traditional family holiday favorite recipes.

As we near the holidays many tastes and smells of family favorite meals are a treasured experience; yet many recipes sabotage our daily food plan and efforts towards healthy eating. Knowing the challenge that many Americans face with the concerns of over indulging during the holiday season the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) MyPlate has created a timely new blog and resources to assist with holiday meal makeovers.

The new eight week blog titled Makeover Your Holiday Meals with MyPlate provides helpful recipes and tips designed to keep an emphasis on health during the holiday season. Small modifications to traditional recipes can lower calories, fat, sodium and sugar content with little change to the recipe’s original taste. MyPlate continues to offer practical and relevant information for individuals and families.

Michigan State University Extension reminds us that healthy eating and active lifestyles are priority for overall health and weight management. Preventing obesity begins with embracing healthier food choices all year long. MSU Extension’s nutrition education programs align with MyPlate and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 and are offered throughout Michigan. To find a program near you contact your local MSU Extension office.
