Have a holiday potluck looming? Here are some ways to bring Michigan food to your party!

This is traditionally the time of year for holiday parties where you either have to bring a dish to pass or want to have something to contribute. Here are some ways to put Michigan-grown food on the table.

Everyone has a potluck go-to dish but there are times when you want to wow your friends and family and show some pride. Here are some ways to add a bit of statewide pride to your holiday potluck. There are many kinds of holiday potluck foods and many personalities in play. Here is a handy guide:

1. You’re a chef: If you’re a great cook and want to show off your gourmet abilities search for winter seasonal recipes and what can be sourced locally that’s fresh and what is coming from local storage. Seek out local year round producers through Michigan MarketMaker or year-round farm markets. A great idea is to feature winter squash in a sweet dish like autumn butternut squash casserole (sweet) or a Upper Peninsula favorite like pasties which include rutabagas, potatoes and carrots which can be stored through the winter.

2. But you always bring the _____: Everyone loves that one dish so much and you enjoy the recognition that you gets for bringing a potluck favorite. You’re also pretty sure that you won’t have to take anything home. Look for local Michigan ingredients where ever you can. To find those ingredients, shop at one of the many farmers markets open year round! To find the closest one to you, visit the Michigan Farmers Market Association (MIFMA) website. Can’t get all the goods there? Highlight what you can get – like Michigan dry beans for that bean dip or Michigan apples for the apple pie!

3. Don’t want to cook or disappoint: ‘Tis the season to be busy, so find a great way to bring value added food like McClure’s pickles for your relish tray or smoked whitefish from the Mackinac Straits Fish Company and crackers and aged cheddar from Farm Country Cheese House. All of these places and more offer mail order food opportunities for all your holiday needs.

Michigan State University Extension supports Michigan farmers, fisheries and food producers throughout the year and especially at the holiday season. Supporting producers in Michigan helps to circulate money in the state’s economy and show pride in your state.
