Great Lakes Cover Crop Initiative field days planned

Learn more about cover crops and their benefits at one of two cover crop field days held on Saginaw Bay Watershed farms September 9 and 13.

Farmers interested in learning more about cover crops and their benefits are invited to attend one of two field days that are scheduled for September 9, 2011 at the John Burke farm in Bay City, Mich., and September 13, 2011 at the John Oaks farm in St Charles, Mich. Both programs will be from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Various cover crop species have been planted at each location and farmers will have an opportunity to see the differences and learn how they might add cover crops to their management systems. Root pits will be dug so participants can get a look below ground and observe how the root systems from each species penetrate the soil profile.

Dale Mutch, Michigan State University cover crop Extension specialist, will be a guest speaker, discussing the benefits, selecting, and new species of cover crops. Additional speakers will include Great Lakes Cover Crop Initiative Watershed educators as well as USDA Natural Resources and Conservation Service personnel. Other agenda topics will be cover crops for prevented planting acres and available cost share for establishing cover crops.
