Free tax preparation
Do you qualify for free tax services? Find out here.
According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), in 2015, approximately 3.7 million people qualified for free tax services. Some consumers may not be aware that they qualify for free tax services. Depending on your income, you may be one of those consumers who qualify for free services. The following services are available:
- The IRS sponsors the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. VITA provides free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. To locate a VITA site near you, use the VITA Locator Tool or call 800-906-9887.
- The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for taxpayers who are primarily 60 years of age and over, specializing in questions about pensions or retirement-related issues unique to seniors. To locate a TCE site near you, use the TCE Locator Tool, AARP Site Locator Tool or call 888-227-7669.
- Myfreetaxes.com, a service provided by United Way, is available for the computer-savvy consumer who can complete their tax returns online with H & R Block software. Your income must be $64,000 or less.
Taking advantage of these free services can save you hundreds of dollars. You can also download the IRS2Go app to check on the status of your tax return, make a payment, or find VITA and TCE face-to-face sites.
