Forage and Cover Crop Field Day
Forages and cover crops are growing in use. Attend this field day to learn more about them and hear what MSU has learned about grass fed beef production.
Michigan State University Extension, Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), Eric Egeler and family and Byron Seeds are sponsoring the Forage and Cover Crop Field Day event on Saturday, August 20, 2016, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Egeler Beef Farms, located at 2940 West Victory Drive, Ludington, Michigan 49431. This field day also qualifies as a MAEAP Phase 1 meeting, so those interested in that program will get started simply by attending.
Attendees will be able to see a plot of 30 varieties of sorghum and sudan grass. Byron Seeds is testing these rather unique crops to Michigan. Eric has been using these crops to effectively finish his cattle without grain.
Eric Egeler owns and manages a cow-calf and beef finishing farm and has transitioned into a grass finishing beef. Michigan State University has cooperated with a number of beef operations around the state through a NCR-SARE funded grant. The goal of the grant is to help farmers learn how to produce grass fed beef. Eric’s farm is one of those farms. Through four years of training, these farms have evolved to the point where several are now producing grass-finished beef. These farms, in conjunction with the MSU Lake City AgBioResearch Center, have now produced over 600 head of finished cattle that were supplied to the grass-fed market.
Field day speakers include MSU Extension educators Jerry Lindquist and Kable Thurlow, Tyson Meador of Alta Seeds, and Ernest Weaver of Byron Seeds. A representative from Master Choice will also be on hand. Come enjoy the day, rain or shine, and learn some exciting things about Michigan grass fed beef. Also, come share a great lunch with us.
