Explore MSU through food science and health lens
The 4-H Health and Food Science Camp let’s youth experience some of the unique heath and food science aspects of Michigan State University.
4-H is a unique organization where its foundations are rooted in research and science that happens at land-grant universities around the country. The Michigan 4-H Youth Development Program is housed at Michigan State University, which is rich with science and research in many areas, including food and health.
MSU Extension has developed a three-day 4-H Health and Food Science Camp for youth ages 13-19 who are interested in exploring MSU and health and food science careers. The 2017 camp will be held Aug. 2-4 at the campus of MSU. Youth can explore the MSU Food Science and Human Nutrition Department and participate in hands-on experiments and tours related to the science of food. Youth will also participate in a healthy Cooking Matters challenge and learn skills to prepare healthy foods.
Kinesiology is another department that will be explored by the youth attending this camp. Youth will learn about the human body and how to take their blood pressure. They will learn about the equipment that is used to measure body fat and the importance of physical fitness.
Other topics at the camp include visiting Olin Health Center, learning about personal safety, working on a team project and more.
