Understanding your nursery costs helps growers improve cost management and production efficiency. Accurate cost estimation helps growers set prices that enable you to recover costs and maintain profitability.

In today’s economy, if you do not know your true costs, you can't set a fair price for your plants. This computer software will work for either container or field grown nursery stock. MSU Extension Specialist Dr. R. Thomas Fernandez and Extension educators Roger Betz and Thomas Dudek have now released a new spreadsheet software CD and tutorial DVD to help nursery growers figure cost of production. Included in the CD/DVD package is a cost of production example spreadsheet and DVD tutorial on how to use the software. The spreadsheet can handle 25, 50 and 100 item enterprises. You must have MS-Office Excel 97 or later to run the program. A Windows or Mac-based personal computer is capable of playing back the DVD although playback is best achieved on a stand-alone DVD player. Copies of the “Estimating the Wholesale Cost of Nursery Production” DVD-029 software set are available from the MSU Bulletin Office for $26.00 plus postage.

To order please call the MSU Extension Bulletin office at: (517) 353-6740 or contact Thomas Dudek at 616-994-4580 or send an email to: dudek@msu.edu for further information.
