East central Michigan field crop regional report – May 16, 2013

Planting is in full swing in the east central region. Producers have been making good progress in just a few days.

Weather

The cold and wet weather over the last weekend put planting on hold a couple of days. The return of dry and warm weather helped producers get back into the fields by Tuesday (May 14). The slight freeze does not appear to have caused any lasting damage.

Commodity reports

Wheat is in the Feeke’s stage 6-7. Wheat condition is mixed: some fields have apparent herbicide damage, some have significant winter injury, a few are off color and lack needed nitrogen and a fair amount look good.

Sugarbeet planting is nearly 100 percent complete. So far no issues have been identified in sugarbeets. Even the early planted sugarbeets appear to be in good shape.

Corn planting is in full swing. The amount planted varies across the region. Some producers are finished. Overall corn is 55 to 65 percent planted.

Soybean planting is beginning and is 10 is 20 percent complete.
