Cool season forage and cover crop field day near Gladwin October 26

A field day sponsored by Michigan State University Extension, Byron Seeds, NRCS, and MAEAP will be held at the Thane and Trena Grove Farm on October 26.

A field day sponsored by Michigan State University Extension, Byron Seeds, Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS), and Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) will be held at the Thane and Trena Grove Farm on October 26. This is a MAEAP Phase 1 meeting.

The farm is located at 2093 Swanstra Road, Gladwin, MI. To get there from the intersection of M-61 & N. M-18 in downtown Gladwin. head north on N. M-18 for 3.5 miles, then west on Wagarville for 1.4 miles then north on Swanstra 0.2 miles to the farm.

The program starts is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. There will be a field tour of a cover crop/forage plot planted with Austrian Winter Peas, Nitro Radish, Mammoth Red Clover, Dwarf Essex Rape, Byron’s Winter Triticale, Allegro Italian Ryegrass, Hairy Vetch, Proleaf 234 Oats, and bin run oats. Attendees will also hear about soil health, grazing of cover crop forages, and water quality.

The Grove farm is a commercial Red Angus cow-calf farm, that produces feeder calves for grass finishing. Speakers include: Gerry Davis from Byron Seeds, MSU Extension Educators Paul Gross, Jerry Lindquist and Kable Thurlow, Thane Grove, NRCS District Conservationist Dave Lehnert and Ken Wawersik of the MAEAP Program.

Come enjoy the two-hour evening program, rain or shine and learn some exciting things about cover crops and grazing. Come prepared for October weather, we will be out in the field!
