Grapes seem to be a treat that many children enjoy. Grapes can be used to create a fun connection between a book and a healthy snack.
Purchase or find a copy at your local library of Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Read the book and explore the adventures of the hungry caterpillar as he eats healthy fruits like plums, apples and oranges and some treats too. Discuss how healthy foods help your child to grow through all parts of life, just like the hungry caterpillar needs food to have energy to grow.
Grapes are a healthy snack. A serving size of grapes is about 16 grapes. They are a source of fiber, vitamins C and B, magnesium and potassium. Grapes can be enjoyed alone, added to a salad or frozen for a sweet treat. Grapes may be best enjoyed by children over the age of four as they may pose as a choking hazard for some kids. A tip to make grapes easier to eat for the younger crowd is to cut grapes in half, by placing grapes on a plate and placing another plate of the same size on top of the grapes. Slice the grapes at once by sliding the knife between the two plates.
Create your own Very Hungry Caterpillars by making caterpillar kabobs with your child. Use a skewering stick, a cherry tomato and some green grapes to form your very own caterpillar-like looking snack. This is a fun, healthy snack that your child can make after enjoying the book.
