Class Action Database simplifies the search for class action lawsuits
Easy access to class action cases and settlements is available in the Class Action Database.
In the past, it was difficult for consumers to find out about class action lawsuits. A class action lawsuit is one in which a group of people with the same or similar injuries caused by the same product or action sue the defendant as a group. They had to rely on information from the internet or media. Most consumers did not have the time or resources to launch into the laborious task of investigating multiple lawsuits.
However, the establishment of the Class Action Database by Consumer Action has simplified consumer efforts. This online database is free to the public. The database is comprised of multiple class actions which are researched and maintained by Consumer Action employees.
Consumers can now find out if they are eligible to participate in any class action. They can join a pending class action lawsuit, file a claim or research the lawsuits. Claims deadlines, official action documents and settlement information are also easily accessible.
The database information is categorized into 3 topics:
- Actions or settlements that are open to claims
- Actions or settlements that are pending
- Actions or settlements that are closed
Litigants should not be wary about joining class action lawsuits or activities. Class actions are an important piece of consumer protection and help eliminate corporate malfeasance.
Consumer Action is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization focusing on consumer education that empowers low- and moderate-income and limited-English-speaking consumers to financially prosper. It also advocates for consumers in the media and before lawmakers to advance consumer rights and promote industry-wide change.
Michigan State University Extension educators urge consumers to access the free Class Action Database to find out if they are eligible to participate in any class action activities. Consumers may be able to receive restitution without the expense of individual litigation.
