Breakfast idea from a dinner staple

Homemade in minutes and good for you, brown rice is more than an item on the dinner menu.

On a cold winter morning there is nothing like a hot breakfast.  Leftover brown rice provides nutrition and satiety quickly and tastefully.  On busy school days many families are wanting a good breakfast, but one that won’t take much time as they rush to scurry out the door. 

Though brown rice may not be your typical breakfast food it is a delicious economical choice.  A steamy bowl of brown rice tastes great on a brisk morning.  Leftover brown rice can be microwaved in less than 1 minute with the same outcome as prepackaged instant oatmeal.

Whole grain benefits include:

  • A good source of the mineral used in building bones called magnesium.  Magnesium also releases energy from muscles. 
  • Selenium protects cells from oxidation and aids the immune system.
  • Iron is found in whole grains and is used to carry oxygen in the blood.
  • Folate (Folic acid) is a nutrient found in whole grains this is important for women who plan on getting pregnant or are at the age where they can still have children.  This nutrient reduces the risk of neural tube defects, spinal bifida and anencephaly during fetal development. 

To add a little extra flavor and nutrients to brown rice after taking it out of the microwave you can add raisins, fruit, honey, milk, butter, pecans, walnuts  and apples.  Making breakfast a priority every day is easy, and can begin with warming up brown rice. It is also a great way to use leftover rice and makes planning a steamy hot breakfast simple, yet delicious.
