Attend the Great Dairy Adventure to learn about Michigan agriculture
The Great Dairy Adventure, held July 22, is open to the public to learn about the Michigan dairy industry and sample locally made dairy foods.
Have you ever wondered how milk moves from the dairy to your local grocery store? If so, join Michigan State University Extension, the United Dairy Industry of Michigan, the MSU Department of Animal Science, the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine, local farmers and other dairy partners at the 2015 Great Dairy Adventure! The event takes place July 22, 2015, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education. Experience the journey milk takes from the cow to the kitchen table and sample numerous, nutritious dairy products along the way.
This year marks the 18th annual Great Dairy Adventure, a fun, educational event that is geared towards families and is a popular field trip destination for many children’s summer programs in the greater Lansing area. There is no admission fee to attend the Great Dairy Adventure and parking at the Pavilion is free.
In addition to learning about the journey of milk, attendants can participate in other activities such as “I milked a cow!” hosted by the MSU Dairy Club, or visit with large animal veterinary students from the College of Veterinary Medicine. There will be multiple different hands-on learning activities and crafts for youth and adults to learn more about dairy farming, milk processing and Michigan agriculture in general.
Multiple local dairy products will be available to sample, including cheese, ice cream, yogurt and pizza. These delicious treats are made with Michigan milk from family farms located across the state. There will also be nutrition educational materials offering simple ideas for teaching youth about the importance of incorporating dairy as part of a complete diet and exercise to maintain stronger bones as part of an overall healthy lifestyle.
The Great Dairy Adventure is part of Michigan Dairy Expo, the largest annual dairy event in the state. Michigan Dairy Expo is a five-day event that brings together youth from all corners of the state to participate in educational contests, such as a Dairy Skill-a-thon Contest and Dairy Cattle Judging. The event is also an opportunity for youth to network with other young people from across the state, build connections within the dairy industry for future internships or career opportunities and learn more about MSU.
