4-H Build a Million curriculum

The 4-H Build a Million curriculum was designed to help high school-age youth develop an understanding of personal finance.

Youth ages 14-18 years old and in the 9-12 grades have an opportunity to learn more about financial literacy by using this online course designed for them. The 4-H Build a Million curriculum helps young people develop an understanding of their personal finances. The curriculum also touches on basic investing for youth. These activities can be easily adapted for younger children in middle school.

The curriculum features many learning activities in the following units:

  • Do You Have What it Takes to be a Millionaire
  • Learning the Basics
  • Investment Basics
  • It’s all about Risk
  • Economy and Investing
  • Putting It All Together and Next Steps

There are 16 lessons that include the learning objective, quick overview of the lesson, discussion questions and hands-on activities. For further information, web resources are also shared.

As part of the curriculum, materials are designed to help youth learn by doing. The variety of activities learned give the participants the opportunity to practice thinking about the experiential learning concept of doing the activity, reflecting on what was learned and then applying to real world examples.

This free curriculum is designed for adult volunteers, parents, financial professionals and others to use to work with young people. There is a 4-H Build a Million Webinar on Wednesday, July 20, 2016, from 12-1 p.m. where participants can engage in activities from this personal finance investment curriculum. Register online at: 4-H Build a Million Webinar. If you are not able to view the webinar, more information can be found by visiting the Michigan State University Extension 4-H Youth Development website.
