2013 Northeast Michigan Local Foods Summit being held March 23

Northeast Michigan Local Foods Summit planned to present food hub & local foods systems work taking place in the region.

Farmers and producers in Northeast Michigan will have a great opportunity to learn about and discuss potential ways to increase profitability, additional channels to market and some of the great activities taking place in other communities that have aided them in sustainability and growth by attending the Northeast Michigan Local Foods Summit on March 23, 2013.

This workshop will be held at the Ralph A. McMullen Conference Center, 104 Conservation Drive, Roscommon, Mich. Registration is free and includes lunch. Pre-registration is requested for planning purposes. The conference begins at 9:30am and will conclude by 4:00pm.

This workshop is a collaboration between USDA Rural Development, Northern Transformation Corp., and Michigan State University Extension, as well as several additional key individuals focused on long term growth throughout the Northeast Michigan region.

Presentations Include food hub work going on in Michigan, understanding community food systems, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA’s), selling to institutions and school systems, food safety and Michigan Agricultural Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP Certifications), farm markets: new market opportunities, incubator kitchens and much more.

Some of what you will learn during this conference is how the food system dynamics are changing throughout the nation and in the state, how working collaboratively with other farmers and associations can increase your market sales, what’s new in northeast michigan: food hub development, CSA’s, incubator kitchens and expanding farmers markets, food safety and MAEAP certifications, new market opportunities for farm markets and processors and what is important to buyers of agriculture products.
