Northern Michigan Small Farm Conference slated for Jan. 28

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The 13th Annual Northern Michigan Small Farm Conference, slated for Jan. 28 at Grayling High School in Grayling, Mich., will feature a film, sessions for specialty farmers and a trade show.
This year’s theme “Growing a Regional Food and Farming Legacy” will feature Chris Bedford’s film “Getting Real about Food and the Future.” And Stephanie Mills, author, lecturer and bioregionalist, will present a post dialogue on the movie.
Some of the sessions offered include:
· Butchering a Whole Goat
· Compost Production
· Affordable Season Extension for the Small Farm
· Improving Milk Quality
· Home Mead and Hard Cider Making
· Post-Harvest Handling and Crop Storage
· Seed Saving
· Year-Round Growing.
A local lunch, prepared by farmer-chef Mike Everts of Blackbird Gardens, will also be part of the day. A trade show runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A diverse group of farmers and organizations including Michigan State University (MSU) Extension organizes the Northern Michigan Small Farm Conference. This year’s major sponsors are the C.S. Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems at MSU and the United States Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development program.
The cost for this conference is $50 for the first person and $35 for each additional person in the same family or farm. The cost for youth is $20.
