The Tollgate Stewards and Stewards-in-Training Volunteer Program offers teens the opportunity to have practical experience exploring careers in education and agriculture. We provide a positive, open-minded, and educational environment where they can experience the responsibilities associated with potential career paths before entering college. Campers benefit from this program as Stewards are positive mentors and role-models that encourage them as they experience new and exciting activities in an outdoor agricultural setting. Participants under 18 need parental consent to participate in this program. Space is limited and the deadline to register for this event is May 1, 2015.
The Stewards-in-Training (SIT) program is the start of the progressive Tollgate Teen Leadership Program. Stewards-in-Training are 12-14 years of age and must have the ability to commit to one full week of camp. SIT’s serve as the leaders and role models for campers during activities. Each of the SIT’s are scheduled to work with the camp group best suited to their age and interests. The cost of $150.00 per week of camp covers the cost of program supplies and materials, including a camp T-shirt. Please make checks payable to Michigan State University and make payment within 10 business days of registering. There are a limited number of spots that are available on a first-come first-serve basis. If cancellation is needed, please do so a minimum of 10 days before the program. Otherwise, there is a cancellation fee of $50.
Stewards are 15-19 years of age. All new Stewards must partake in a formal interview and background screening. If selected, stewards must commit to at least one week of camp. Stewards act as assistants to the Educational Leaders and role models for others. A mandatory orientation and training for successful candidates will be held at Tollgate on Saturday, June 13. Camp Stewards enjoy the camp experience at no cost! Stewards will receive a camp T-shirt and are invited to attend an overnight Teen Leadership capstone celebration at the Farm, August 27 – 28.
