Teacher Institute - Michigan Technological University Urban Forest Stewardship

As part of this 5-day institute, participants will gain new knowledge and skills through lecture, hands-on data collection, classroom activities, and field trips, that can be integrated into their science, social studies, and math curricula. Topics include tree identification, forest measurements, forest health & insect pests, wildlife, water quality monitoring, and carbon sequestration. Explore ways to engage students in forest stewardship and innovative school-community service-learning partnerships. Funded by the U.S. Forest Service for 20 teachers participating in the ‘Developing Middle and High SchoolStudents to Become Urban Forest Stewards’ year-long program in Detroit schools. Co-sponsored by MAEOE and the Belle Isle Nature Zoo.
