SVREC Beescape Meeting

Date: June 3, 2016
Time: 12:30 - 5 p.m.
Location: 3775 S Reese Rd, Frankenmuth, MI 48734
Contact: Ben Phillips, 616.901.7513, phill406@msu.edu

On June 3, from 12:30 – 5 pm, MSU Extension will be inviting Meghan Milbrath to the Saginaw Valley Research and Extension Center (3775 S Reese Rd, Frankenmuth, MI) to go through the two demonstration hives that we have installed there. We will check for Varroa mites, and discussing expected bee activity for that time of year and how habitat influences honey bees. I personally manage these hives poorly, so I’m sure there will be much for all to learn. This is part of a longer term project to establish and demonstrate “beescape” pollinator plantings for the Bay and Thumb region. Members of SVBA are welcome to attend, and to help grow the project. We will serve hot dogs at 12:30.

MSU Extension and Extension Master Gardeners are installing flowering herbaceous annuals, perennials, and shrubs and trees on the NW corner of the property to evaluate their ease of establishment and attractiveness to pollinators. Our plan is to eventually host the most successful plants to provide a full-sun “beescape” garden with plants that can be established in similar situations across the region. We had one planting day on May 13, and will be planting additional perennials on June 3 after the honey bee demonstration. If you have perennials that you would like to donate, we would be happy to find a place for them on the property for evaluation as well. Woody, shrubby, or herbaceous types are welcome, with some limitations defined by the farm manager. Please contact Ben Phillips at (phill406@msu.edu, 616.901.7513) or Abi Saeed (saeedabi@msu.edu, 810.244.8531) to arrange for plant donations.
