Presented by Michigan State University Extension and Northwest Michigan Council of Governments.

A core principle to growth is the importance of ensuring that investment and development will provide benefits to the community. Traditional approaches to land use regulation have long required development to meet minimum standards as outlined in a zoning ordinance.

The challenge is always to strike the right balance, so the zoning ordinance is not too onerous and time-consuming and developers/investors see sufficient economic value at the end while at the same time, protecting the public interest and to help achieve the community’s shared vision of a quality environment.

Part of that balance is preparing a zoning ordinance which is easy to understand, simple to use, and visually effective.

This workshop is being offered in Traverse City, Boyne City, and Manistee.  Completion of this workshop provides Master Citizen Planner Credits.
