It goes without saying that most zoning ordinances are not the simplest documents to read and navigate. Although zoning standards need to be specific and contain the necessary information to be enforceable, they don’t have to be intimidating documents that are frustrating for zoning officials, residents, and developers to use.

The challenge then is to write and organize a zoning ordinance in an easy-to-understand format. This workshop will focus on:

  • Clear and non-redundant ordinance organization
  • Logical layout design and formatting on paper and for the Internet
  • Effective use of charts and illustrations
  • Technology tools to improve access and navigability

The training is tailored for planning commissioners, zoning administrators, elected officials and ZBA members - all of which work with the zoning ordinance. Read more about the program in Streamlining the zoning ordinance.
