St. Joseph County IPM Breakfast Series
Irrigation: Experiences with Soil Moisture Monitors and Schedulers

Tony Belcher is a sales and service representative for Koviack Irrigation and Farm Services in Three Rivers, MI.  He has been working in and around irrigation since 2002, beginning in the turf industry.  He has a Turfgrass Management degree from Michigan State University that included an emphasis in irrigation. He has worked on all aspects of irrigation from service, sales, installation, and design in golf, residential and agricultural settings. Wally Hekter is a second generation farmer with Legacy Land Farms, Inc. who has been experimenting with IRROMETER soil moisture sensors for three years to better manage irrigation on his family farm.

Mr. Belcher and Mr. Hekter will address irrigation management decisions on lighter soils in southwest Michigan. They will discuss their experiences with different methods of measuring soil moisture. They will describe different technologies for managing and scheduling irrigation.

This series of breakfast meetings will focus on various aspects of field crop production in Southwest Michigan. The meetings will be held at the Royal Cafe in Centreville, MI at 7:00 AM every Tuesday morning from April 19 through June 28, 2016.  Meetings will include updates on integrated pest management (IPM) and other issues from the local MSU Extension field crops team followed by a presentation on a topic important to field crop production.  Participants can order their own breakfasts and eat during the meeting.  Open to the public, no pre-registration is necessary.  Contact Eric Anderson (eander32@msu.edu or 269-467-5511) at the MSU Extension office in Centreville with questions.

This breakfast meeting is being sponsored by Mike Schrock with Advanced Farm Supply, Inc. in Burr Oak, MI. The overall IPM breakfast series is supported by a donation from the Monsanto Company.
