St. Joseph County IPM Breakfast Series
Interseeding Cover Crops
Jamie Scott operates JA Scott Farms with his father and farms 2,000 acres of corn, soybeans and wheat in Kosciusko County, IN. He plants cover crops on 100% of their acres, and he started Scott’s Cover Crops, a separate business to help other farmers incorporate cover crops into their rotations. Mr. Scott will briefly describe the benefits of incorporating cover crops in a rotation, and he will discuss the challenges and benefits of interseeding. He will focus on aerial seeding and explain the pros and cons of this method.
Justin Davidhizar has overseen precision agriculture projects for the past three years and cover crop projects for the past two years with Johansen Farms LLC in Three Rivers, MI. Mr. Davidhizar will address the pros and cons of interseeding with a highboy and what considerations are important when using this method.
This series of breakfast meetings will focus on various aspects of field crop production in Southwest Michigan. The meetings will be held at the Royal Cafe in Centreville, MI at 7 a.m. every Tuesday morning from April 19 through June 28, 2016. Meetings will include updates on integrated pest management (IPM) and other issues from the local MSU Extension field crops team followed by a presentation on a topic important to field crop production. Participants can order their own breakfasts and eat during the meeting. Open to the public, no pre-registration is necessary. Contact Eric Anderson (firstname.lastname@example.org or 269-467-5511) at the MSU Extension office in Centreville with questions.
This breakfast meeting is being sponsored by Ralph Lutes with Lutes Flying Service, Inc. in Shipshewana, IN. The overall IPM breakfast series is supported by a donation from the Monsanto Company.
