St. Joseph County IPM Breakfast Series
Field Crop Nutrient Management Concerns and Technologies
Kurt Steinke is an Assistant Professor of Soil Fertility and Nutrient Management at Michigan State University. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. His research and extension interests include improving the ecological efficiency and refining nutrient management strategies for a broad array of production agricultural systems, evaluating the environmental impacts of managed ecosystems, managing phosphorus-enriched stormwater runoff, environmental stress physiology and management, and drought and water management.
Steinke will address nutrient management issues that are important for crop production systems in southwest Michigan. He will explain recent field research results and how they can be used by growers to inform fertilizer application decisions. He will make recommendations for nitrogen fertilizer applications for the rest of the season based on weather patterns to date. He will also discuss current technologies for measuring crop nutrient needs and how these also can be used to inform decisions.
This series of breakfast meetings will focus on various aspects of field crop production in Southwest Michigan. The meetings will be held at the Royal Cafe in Centreville, MI at 7 a.m. every Tuesday morning from April 19 through June 28, 2016. Meetings will include updates on integrated pest management (IPM) and other issues from the local MSU Extension field crops team followed by a presentation on a topic important to field crop production. Participants can order their own breakfasts and eat during the meeting. Open to the public, no pre-registration is necessary. Contact Eric Anderson (firstname.lastname@example.org or 269-467-5511) at the MSU Extension office in Centreville with questions.
This breakfast meeting is being sponsored by Tony Belcher with Koviack Irrigation & Farm Services in Three Rivers, MI. The overall IPM breakfast series is supported by a donation from the Monsanto Company.
