This two-day workshop to teach produce growers safe practices for using biological soil amendments of animal origin in compliance with the FSMA Produce Safety Rule. 

Workshop locations and dates are as follows:

  • April 11-12, Detroit
  • April 16-17, Mt. Pleasant
  • April 19-20, Grand Junction
  • May 14-15, Traverse City
  • May 17-18, Chatham

Workshop agenda:

Day 1
8:30 - 9 a.m.      Registration

9 a.m. - noon     Biological soil amendment definitions, produce safety rule and grower practices, right to farm, manure managment plans, challenges regarding compliance with FSMA regulations

Noon - 1 p.m.     Lunch and bus ride to composting facility

1 - 3 p.m.          Composting facility visit, four phases of composting, composting challenges

Day Two
9:30 a.m. - noon     Food safety plan writing workshop: SOPs and Food Safety plan section for biological soil amendments

noon - 1:30 p.m.     Working lunch, MAEAP Phase I credits granted, participation certificates
