“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me!” If words can never harm us, why does just about everyone get upset when they are criticized, poked fun at, talked harshly to, and yelled at? What is said does hurt, and the way words are said also hurts. You can tear down the self-worth of a child through constant criticism and blame. The key to healthy communication is to communicate your thoughts and feelings to your children in a matter that does not purposefully hurt them, or encourages them to think less of themselves. This class will help parents learn to model appropriate communication styles by learning to use I-statements and You messages. Pre registration required by calling 734-222-3943.
