Northwest Michigan is blessed with outstanding water resources that draw people to our part of the state. Protecting inland lake shorelines is vital to economic development and environmental protection. This program is designed to introduce planning and zoning officials to the tools, techniques and challenges associated with shoreline protection zoning standards.
- How to assess the situation on your lakes and streams
- Maps and data resources
- Master Plan goals and objectives for shoreline protection; how to use aerial photos to identify problem areas
- Zoning ordinance options for setbacks, buffer strips, shoreline erosion control structures, lot area coverage, and site plan review
- Practical considerations; how shoreline regulation fits with voluntary approaches
Master Citizen Planners will earn 3 credits for this program. Educational program will be presented by Dean Solomon, a recognized expert on local land use policy and natural resource protection through strategic and forward-looking planning. This workshop will be presented on two dates in two locations: Traverse City Michigan Works! Center Main conference room (enter from the south side), and Manistee City Hall.
