Culture encompasses so many facets of who we are as individuals beyond race or ethnicity. Youth programming has the potential to bring together individuals who have very different worldviews based on their experiences and identities. Staff and volunteers who are able to understand privilege imbalances and empathize with youth they work with will not only do a better job of serving them but also gain greater satisfaction through their volunteer service. This session will define cultural competency and its role in youth programming and provide participants with resources for training and supporting volunteers. Workshop participants will experience hands-on activities designed to help their audiences explore issues of cultural competence, personal values, and issues of privilege.
