Teaching Teens to Value Education

Research strongly suggests that teens who make the most of schooling are building developmental assets that will help them make wise choices in the present and future. This session is intended to help parents facilitate positive developmental assets related to an adolescent’s education. It suggests ways that parents can reinforce teens' motivation to learn, encourage them to spend time on homework, and help them succeed in academics and other aspects of school.

The objectives are:

  • Learn about the impact of school experience on teen development.
  • Learn about qualities of home and family life that spark a teen's motivation to learn.
  • Identify ways to help teens get good grades, complete homework, and in other ways successfully meet the challenges of school.

Positive Futures

Adolescence is, in essence, a time of life that is devoted to preparing for adulthood. Almost every experience allows kids to learn something about how to manage life as an adult. Adolescents slowly gain new powers in realism and imagination which help them think in more complex ways about the future. This session is intended to help parents support their teens as they begin to prepare for their future. The workshop suggests several areas that have great impact upon an adolescent's future such as educational and vocational choices. It provides guidelines for helping teens prepare for the future and develop a sense of purpose and optimism.

  • Relate adolescent development to preparation for the future.
  • Identify areas of life that have significant impact upon an adolescent's future, and understand why these areas have far-reaching consequences.
  • Identify guidelines for helping teens to prepare for the future and to develop a positive view of the future.
