Food safety and good agricultural practices have steadily become a requirement to sell to wholesale outlets. Now many direct sale customers are requiring certain food safety standards be adopted.
This session will review the key concepts of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), discuss the pending food legislation Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), local resources being developed to help your farm stay ahead of the curve and a brief introduction to the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP).
We will discuss the importance of implementing and communicating food safety practices even if you are not seeking certification. Following the classroom portion of the workshop we will visit a local farm where Phil Tocco, MSU Extension preharvest food safety educator, will walk participants through a mock audit. Each session includes three hours of classroom instruction, a catered lunch and an onsite mock farm audit. Pre-registration and $10 payment required.
